Pavia is located about 40 km in the south of Milan. If you come to Milan airport, just take the bus to Milan central station (Milano centrale) then ask for the train to Pavia (30 minutes only). To be accepted as Ph.D student in the University of Pavia, the candidate is asked to apply in the early summer (deadline end of June or July, usually) and to pass an admission test, planned at the beginning of October of each year. Thus, he is required to provide some documents and to fill an application form. The prepared file (containing the asked documents and the application form) has to be sent to the address of “Ufficio Borse e Dottorati di Ricerca” in the university before dead line, usually June or July.

The required documents for passing the test are: 1. Copy of your university degrees (Bachelor and Master); 2. Copy of your exams transcripts during your studies (certificate attesting the examinations passed and the relative scores); 3. Copy of your university documents of the program of the courses. 4. In the morning, you will be required to write a text on a proposed scientific subject of continuum mechanics or structural dynamics (in English). In the afternoon, you will answer questions on your ongoing activity. |
When being accepted, the University of Pavia will ask you to provide your documents in an original translated form. Documents are: 1. An official Italian translation of your degrees (Bachelor and Master). These documents have to be legalized by the Italian consular service in your country; 2. The “dichiarazione di valore”. You have only to take the original copies of you degrees (Bachelor and Master) to the Italian consular service in your country and ask about the “dichiarazione di valore” (it declared your eligibility according with Italian Higher Education System); 3. An official Italian translation of your exams transcripts (official translation of the certificates attesting the examinations passed and the relative scores). These documents have to be legalized by the Italian consular service in your country; 4. Application form; 5. Photocopy of identity document; 6. Photocopy of “Codice fiscale” (Natural Fiscal Number); 7. Fee to be paid; 8. 3 Photos. |
It is a simple document provided by the ministry of finance, you can get it from the Italian embassy in your country (before being in Italy) or, when being in Italy, by taking it (in the same hour) from the office of finance ministry in Pavia by just presenting your passport. |

The department of structural mechanics can provide you an invitation letter for participating in the admission test to get the visa. You can simply rent an apartment or a room in an apartment by your self (from agencies or announcement in the streets, there is a lots). Otherwise, you can apply for a room in the student dormitories (Collegio) that are buildings reserved to students. |
