Chronology of intervention: -671: Foundation of the mosque by Oqba Iben Nafâa.

-703: Reconstruction of the mosque by Hassen Ibn Annoûmen.
-Middle of VIII: Revised mosque and decorated by Hîcham, Khaliph of Damascus.
-772: New reconstruction by Yazid Ibn Hatim.
-836-863: The reconstruction in two stages, following the same project, but done by tow different sovereign Aghalabides: Ziyadet Allah the1st (836), and Abou Ibrahim Ahmed (863).
-875: Construction of three bays again at the expense of the court, also amputated on the three other sides by the double galleries.
-From 1025 to 1972: Different interventions and restorations in 1025 - 1249 - 1294 - 1618 - the end of XIX - the beginning of the XX -1972.

Description of the Interventions:
-671: Foundation of the core of the mosque.
-690: The mosque and the city are destroyed by the Berber ordered by Kosaïla.
-703: Well rebuilt by Hassen Ibn Annoûmen that replaces the primitive building by a new bigger mosque.
-The middle of the VIII: The mosque is revised and is decorated by Hîcham that give it the measurements of the present mosque. The square minaret would have been begun at this moment.
-772: The governor Yazid Ibn Hathim cut down the entire mosque, with the exception of the mihrab, and rebuilds it all over again. Many modifications intervene then, but it is the sanctuary in its essential lines that one sees today.
-Between 836 and 863: This building should have been replaced by another. The big present mosque would understand therefore, except the mihrab, no element previous to the 9th century. Reconstruction took place in two stages, following the same project, but make by two different sovereign Aghlabides:
Ziyadet Allah 1st (836): The prayer room is composed of four bays, which the largest is in the bottom. In front of the mihrab the intersection of the central nave with the large bay is surmounted of a big dome resting on an octagonal drum.
Abou Ibrahim Ahmad (863): Enlarges the oratory of three bays northwards.
-875: Construction of three bays again at the expense of the court, also amputated on the three other sides by the double galleries.
